The recent Rio Grande Rivalry match between the University of New Mexico and New Mexico State was full of enthusiasm. Over 27,000 fans gathered at University Stadium to witness the in-state rivalry, with the Aggies emerging victorious by a score of 27-17.

The teams had similar stats in the game. UNM had 401 yards while NMSU had 387 yards. Both teams had similar rushing and passing numbers, but the Aggies were able to find the end zone more than the Lobos.

NMSU QB and former Volcano Vista High School standout, Diego Pavia, was a factor in the game’s outcome. Despite not receiving a scholarship from UNM, Pavia showed his skills with 203 passing yards, 96 rushing yards, and two touchdowns.

UNM head coach Danny Gonzales gave Diego credit, “he [Diego] got some tough yards up front and made us miss a couple tackles.” He also recognized NMSU’s hard work “They made more plays than we did.” Gonzales went on to say how the Lobos would fare for the remainder of the season, boldly claiming that UNM would be bowl eligible. “I guarantee this team will be in a bowl game this year. We will find five wins from here to the Utah State game.”

UNM now has a 1-2 record while NMSU improved to 2-2. Next week the Lobos will visit UMASS while the Aggies travel to Hawaii for a non conference meeting.
