APS METRO SOCCER Tournament pool play recaps and results
Pool play for the 2023 APS Metro Soccer Tournament wrapped up and there were some dominating and surprising performances in both the girls and boys groups. 4A Girls team’s should up and showed out with 3 out 4 teams in the gold bracket (Hope Christian, Albuquerque Academy, St. Pius X). The lone 5A team being La Cueva. The lady Huskies of Hope Christian demonstrated why they are the top team in New Mexico going undefeated in a pool that included both 5A championship teams from 2022. The silver bracket is full of teams that had impressive performances. Cleveland gave Hope Christian a run for their money only losing 1-0. Albuquerque High narrowly missed being in the gold bracket after playing La Cueva to a draw. Both Sandia and Volcano Vista have very solid overall teams that are capable of netting goals at any moment.
On the boys side of things, 5A District 1 reemphasized why they are the toughest district for soccer. 3 out of the 5 teams in District 1 are in the gold bracket (Volcano Vista, Cleveland, Rio Rancho) with a fourth team (Atrisco Heritage) in the silver for good measure. La Cueva is the only school to make the gold bracket for both girls and boys. Teams that had impressive pool play include a dangerous Highland Hornet team, Rio Grande, and St. Pius. Albuquerque High demonstrated moments of brilliance as well.
Bracket Play begins September 5, 2023 and goes through September 8, 2023.
