Eagles and Matadors play a close match that ends with a golden goal

On Saturday, in boys soccer, the undefeated Hobbs Eagles visited Albuquerque to face off with the Sandia Matadors. Sandia was able to strike first early on in the match but that didn’t keep Hobbs down. Teo Ojeda and Jake Rivas both found the back of the net for the Matadors. For Hobbs, Franklin Ferrufino and Joshua Chavez were the goal scorers. Regulation ended with both teams at two goals a piece after the Eagles manufactured a game tying goal late in the second half. Sandia goalkeeper, 8th grader Chase Clark, had eight saves which helped Sandia stay in the match.

Hobbs Striker Joshua Chavez

Hobbs didn’t need much overtime as they quickly found Joshua Chavez at the top of the box where he was able to find some space for a game winning shot. Chavez on going into overtime, “Our mentality was just give it them honestly.” He also spoke about Hobbs’ aspirations to stay undefeated and making playoffs.

Hobbs Head Coach Reyes Marquez who is in his first year with the Eagles told us that playing at the APS Soccer Complex is a little different because of the turf and small fields comparing it to playing indoor soccer. “It changes your game so much, it is like playing indoor.” Marquez spoke to us about how Hobbs has been on the road a lot and how he is looking forward to being able to play at home. “I kind of feel like our boys have been road warriors lately…It’s good to finally get to go home”. This is the second consecutive weekend that Hobbs has traveled to Albuquerque as they were here last week for the Albuquerque Academy Invitational, which they won.

When asked about the Hobbs stellar undefeated season so far Coach Marquez humbly expressed how nice it was while looking to the Eagles next tough match ups. “It feels good, we’re in the right place where we want to be…We still have Santa Teresa out of district…and then we have La Cueva coming into our house on Thursday, and those are big match ups…and we have Las Cruces still on Saturday”

The Hobbs Eagles have a week full of tough opponents. The good thing about that is that they will have those games on their home turf where they feel comfortable playing on one of the larger fields in the state.
