nmaa Sports summary from the week of 9/18 – 9/23
Here what you need to know from the last week in sports and what to look forward to this week.
Soccer
In boys soccer, the Hobbs Eagles and La Cueva Bears both continued their undefeated seasons. Hobbs had a match with Sandia that needed overtime. La Cueva beat Las Cruces in a close match, 2-1. Hobbs and La Cueva will meet this Thursday in Hobbs. This match up will be one of the best all season. Who will come away on top?
In girls soccer, Las Cruces remains unbeaten. 4A powerhouse Hope Christian downed Volcano Vista 2-1. St. Pius and Albuquerque Academy played a close one with the Chargers coming out on top, 1-0. La Cueva took care of Cibola 2-1 in a midweek match up. In the latter half of the week, Eldorado held off Hope Christian for 1-0 win. Volcano Vista and a tough Albuquerque High met each other with the Hawks taking the 2-1 victory. This week, Saint Pius X takes on Rio Rancho. Santa Fe hosts Albuquerque High. Undefeated Las Cruces takes on rival Mayfield. Eldorado travels to Piedra Vista for a tough road match. Hope Christian has Albuquerque Academy later in the week.
Volleyball
There are three undefeated teams across the classes in New Mexico. La Cueva, Melrose, and Cloudcroft. Cibola hosted La Cueva in a rematch of the the two metro championship teams. The Bears narrowly escaped an upset coming back from being down 2-1 sets. Roswell was able to take down Goddard in five sets. Albuquerque Academy beat Sandia in five sets as well. This week has some good matches on deck. St. Michael’s hosts Santa Fe. #1 La Cueva will host Cleveland. Cibola will face off with Los Lunas.
Football
On Thursday night, Goddard and La Cueva dominated in their games. Friday had good games. The top two teams in the state, Artesia and Roswell, continued their undefeated seasons in a dominating fashion. Cleveland had their hands full at home with the Frenship Tigers (TX) who left victorious, 35-0. Miyamura went into Moriarty and returned with their second win of the season, 40-38 Patriots. On Saturday, St. Michael’s hosted Aztec and defeated them 19-7. Volcano Vista took it to Eldorado 38-19. Legacy Academy traveled to Las Cruces to face off with Mesilla Valley Christian School. The Silverbacks extended their win streak to four straight. Rio Rancho beat Farmington in a quality win, 48-28. Mayfield slugged it out with Belen, coming back to beat them 22-20. The Del Norte Knights ended their long winless drought by beating Rio Grande, 21-12.
Looking forward, this Thursday, St. Pius X and Albuquerque Academy will play at Community Stadium, 7pm. Carlsbad visits Alamogordo in the beginning of district play. On Friday, in a rivalry showdown, La Cueva takes on Eldorado at Wilson Stadium, 7pm. At Community Stadium, Volcano Vista hosts Cleveland in an ever important district match up. Mayfield and Deming will clash at the Field of Dreams. (4-1) Texico will travel to (4-2) Eunice. Saturday has a huge match up in West Mesa vs Sandia at 11am. St. Michael’s will host West Las Vegas at 1pm.
