Here what you need to know from the last week in sports and what to look forward to this week.

Soccer

In the match of the week for boys soccer, the Hobbs Eagles defeated the La Cueva Bears to stay undefeated. The Eagles scored a late goal to put themselves ahead in a fiercely contested match. They are the team to beat in all of New Mexico. In other games, Volcano Vista hosted Los Alamos and took the win. Atrisco Heritage continued their strong season beating Cleveland in overtime on Saturday, 5-4. Rio Grande continues to be a solid squad on the pitch.

In girls soccer, St. Pius beat Rio Rancho 5-0 in the beginning of the week. On Tuesday, Las Cruces edged out Mayfield 1-0. In a battle of the top two teams in 4A, Hope Christian handled Academy 5-1 on Friday. Eldorado and Sandia played a match that required overtime with the Matadors pulling the OT victory out with a final of 3-2. La Cueva and Las Cruces remained unbeaten through the week.

Volleyball

There is now one undefeated team across the classes in New Mexico, the Cloudcroft Bears. La Cueva still holds a 54 game winning streak in New Mexico after traveling to Arizona for the Nike Tournament of Champions where they faced elite competition from across the nation. The Rio Rancho Volleybash had two top New Mexico teams face off in the championship. Las Cruces swept Cibola to take the championship. The Bulldawgs went through the entire tournament in dominant fashion without losing a single set. In the third place match, Cleveland came back to win after losing the first two sets to Rio Rancho. Texico handed Melrose their first loss of the season in a match that needed five sets.

Football

Thursday night football had two match ups. Albuquerque Academy spoiled St. Pius X’s homecoming game, 28-12. The Alamogordo Tigers downed Carlsbad 32-27 in district play.

On Friday, Bloomfield remained unbeaten as the Bobcats beat Bayfield (CO), 42-7. Los Alamos handed Bernalillo their first loss of the season, 26-19. Cleveland had a bounce back win in their district opener against Volcano Vista, 35-12. The Storm defense was relentless against the Hawks. Top 5A programs, Artesia and Roswell had massive victories. La Cueva scored nine touchdowns as they routed their rival Eldorado, 74-20.

On Saturday, Las Cruces traveled to Hobbs and beat the Eagles 42-27 to open up district play. The Sandia Matadors grinded out an impressive victory against West Mesa, 36-28. Atrisco Heritage beat Cibola, 36-25. Lovington knocked off Santa Fe, 62-20. West Las Vegas and St. Michael’s played a grueling game that finished on Sunday due to weather. The Dons took the victory, 7-6.

Looking Forward

Volleyball
All volleyball eyes will be on Tuesday’s match up that pits #1 La Cueva and #2 Las Cruces against each other at La Cueva at 6:30pm. Cibola will host Centennial and Eldorado will host Mayfield the same night at the same time.
