NMAA Football HQ Sports bracketology headed into last week of football.

In 6A, there are teams that are playoff locks regardless of what happens in the last week. We are focused on the bottom of the seedings as there are quite a few teams hovering around the bubble that can make an argument to be playing in the postseason. There are six teams that need to help their cases for playoffs in the last week. Farmington Scorpions (5-4), West Mesa Mustangs (5-4), Eldorado Eagles (4-5), Clovis Wildcats (4-5), Alamogordo Tigers (4-5), and Atrisco Heritage Jaguars (5-4).

Key Match Ups

Farmington vs La Cueva

Farmington had a decent season going for them, but district play was not the Scorpions’ friend, and they have La Cueva this week. Farmington may very well end the season at 5-5 when it is all said and done. This will make for an interesting seeding dilemma towards the bottom of the rankings.

Best-case scenario for Farmington: Win

Worst-case scenario: Loss, Eldorado win, Los Lunas win, Organ Mountain win

West Mesa vs Eldorado

Both teams are in a position to help themselves here. The winner of this game should make the playoffs, the loser will most likely be out of the picture. This game will also influence the rest of the playoff bracket no matter who wins here.

Best-case scenario for both schools: Win

Worst-case for Eldorado: loss, Los Lunas win, Organ Mountain win, Volcano Vista win, La Cueva win

Worst-case for West Mesa: loss, Los Lunas win, Organ Mountain win

Los Lunas vs Clovis

This is a district championship. Clovis hosts Los Lunas and if they can pull off an upset, they will be in the postseason and dash the hopes of other bubble teams with better resumes as Los Lunas will still be a playoff team. A loss for the Wildcats puts them out of the playoff field.

Best-case scenario for Clovis: Win the district championship

Atrisco Heritage Academy vs Volcano Vista

Atrisco Heritage can make a statement with a win against Volcano Vista. Their case for playoffs will improve, but they will also need help in hopes that other bubble teams lose. Atrisco is by far the long shot for playoffs in this last week.

Best-case scenario for Atrisco Heritage: Win, Los Lunas win, Organ Mountain win, West Mesa win

Alamogordo vs Organ Mountain

Alamogordo finds themselves with a game that they should easily win. The Tigers’ hopes of playoffs will hinge on the result of other games. Luckily for Alamo, the other game scripts should play out in their favor. The game Tiger fans will be paying attention to is West Mesa/Eldorado.

Best-case scenario for Alamogordo: Win, Los Lunas win, West Mesa win, La Cueva win

A just for fun nightmare scenario for the selection committee.
Clovis win, Farmington loss, Hobbs loss, Eldorado win, West Mesa loss, Atrisco Heritage loss, Alamogordo win. This would put all the bubble teams at 5-5 and Clovis would be guaranteed a playoff spot in this scenario, leaving three vacancies for six teams. Finish in district play and head-to-head matchups would help to began sorting this headache out if it were to happen.
