Lobos Show Fight, Fall to Michigan in Season Opener
ANN ARBOR, MI – UNM FOOTBALL
The New Mexico Lobos opened their 2025 campaign with one of the toughest challenges in college football: a trip to Ann Arbor to face nationally ranked Michigan. Despite flashes of promise, the Lobos fell 34–17, undone by turnovers and the Wolverines’ physicality.
Offensive Bright Spots
Quarterback Jack Layne led the way through the air, completing 31 of 47 passes for 208 yards and a touchdown. Tight end Dorian Thomas proved to be his most reliable target, catching 10 passes for 71 yards and both of UNM’s receiving touchdowns.

Costly Mistakes
Three turnovers derailed the Lobos’ chances of keeping pace. Michigan capitalized on short fields and controlled the trenches, showing why they are considered one of the Big Ten’s most complete teams.
Key Fact
This matchup marked the Lobos’ season opener against a nationally ranked opponent on the road — a steep measuring stick that highlighted both the strides UNM has made and the work still to be done.
Takeaway
While the loss stung, New Mexico demonstrated offensive potential, especially in its passing game. With improved ball security, the Lobos showed they can compete against top-tier defenses.
