NMAA BOYS SOCCER: A tough battle between two rivals ends with Rio lifting the Metro Trophy
ALBUQUERQUE — The beginning of the game leaned toward the Albuquerque High Bulldogs, who struck early with a goal in the fifth minute. The Bulldogs maintained control throughout the first half, heading into halftime with a 1–0 lead.
Coming out of the break, however, the Rio Grande Ravens found their momentum. Kevin Trejo helped Rio Grande fight back, tying the game at 1–1. From there, the match remained evenly contested, with both teams creating strong scoring opportunities.
With the game still tied at the final whistle, the Metro Championship matchup headed into golden-goal overtime. In the 87th minute, Yahir Mendoza delivered the game-winning goal, assisted by Daniel Velazquez, securing the Metro Championship for the Ravens.
After lifting the trophy with his team surrounding him, Rio Grande head coach Brian Weems reflected on the emotional victory.
“I won this for my mom. She passed away a month ago, and we won it for her tonight,” Weems said before celebrating with his team.
The championship victory adds another memorable moment to Weems’ coaching career. A six-time District High School Coach of the Year, Weems and the Ravens finished their Metro Championship run on top.
