ALBUQUERQUE — The Bosque Bobcats earned a dramatic 1–1 (4–3 in penalties) victory over Sandia Prep on Thursday afternoon in the Class A/3A girls state quarterfinals, surviving a tense overtime battle to advance to the semifinals.
Sandia Prep started strong, striking first in the opening half to take control early. The Sundevils’ organized defense and composed midfield play held Bosque scoreless through much of the first 40 minutes, keeping the tempo in their favor as the Bobcats looked for rhythm heading into the break.
The second half, however, brought nonstop action. Bosque’s young talent sparked the comeback when 8th graders #10 Bailey Bird and #23 Maliyah Jasper found the back of the net for the Bobcats. Sandia Prep also added another goal of their own, setting up a 2–2 deadlock that carried through to the end of regulation.
Both teams battled fiercely through overtime, trading scoring opportunities but unable to break through. In the decisive penalty shootout, Bosque stayed composed, converting four of its five attempts while Sandia Prep could only net three to clinch the 4–3 shootout victory.
The win marks another step forward for a young Bosque squad, led by its underclassmen core and a resilient defensive unit. With the result, the Bobcats advance to the Class A/3A state semifinals to face top seeded Cottonwood Classical, while Sandia Prep’s season ends in heartbreak despite a strong, well-fought effort that showcased their experience and discipline.
