Sandia High School’s girls basketball team earned a statement victory at the Joe Armijo Classic, defeating Albuquerque Academy 59–40 in a highly anticipated tournament matchup on Friday. Sophomore Kaiyah Benally (No. 25) delivered a standout performance, pouring in 31 points and controlling the pace of the game on both ends of the floor. Freshman Mikayla Hogan provided strong support with 12 points, helping the Matadors build and maintain separation as the game progressed.
Albuquerque Academy was led offensively by sophomore Lily Skarsgard, with senior Addie Spratley also contributing key baskets, but the Chargers struggled to keep up with Sandia’s tempo. The matchup drew heavy attention due to the elite talent on display, including Academy’s 6-foot-6 Harper Dunn, a finalist for the U16 USA Girls Basketball Team who holds Division I offers from Iowa, Oklahoma, TCU, and Oregon. Sandia’s Benally, one of the state’s most highly recruited players with offers from UNM, UNLV, and SDSU, showcased her all-around ability in a game filled with intensity and high-level play. The win highlighted Sandia’s depth and star power in a tournament setting packed with some of New Mexico’s top basketball prospects.
