ALBUQUERQUE — The No. 1 Volcano Vista Hawks delivered another championship performance, defeating the No. 2 Cleveland Storm 66–52 in the NMAA Class 5A boys state title game, securing their fifth consecutive state championship.
Volcano Vista set the tone early, racing out to a 19-point first quarter behind efficient offense and strong defensive pressure. The Hawks maintained control in the second, adding 13 more points while holding Cleveland to 18 total points in the first half. David Lunn led Volcano with 14 first-half points, while Remy Albrecht kept Cleveland somewhat in the game with 12 before the break.
The Storm showed resilience in the third quarter, outscoring the Hawks 17–13 to cut into the deficit and build momentum heading into the final period. However, Volcano Vista responded decisively in the fourth, pouring in 21 points to pull away and seal the championship victory.
Lunn finished with 23 points to lead the Hawks, while Eli Covell added a strong all-around effort with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Cleveland was paced by Albrecht, who posted a game-high 28 points in the loss.
After the win, Volcano Vista head coach Greg Brown was nearly speechless as his team celebrated another title. Cleveland head coach Zack Cole praised his squad’s effort, saying, “Just leave it all out on the court and that’s what our kids did. I’m proud of them.” With the victory, Volcano Vista continues its dynasty atop Class 5A, extending one of the most dominant championship runs in New Mexico high school basketball history.
