Rio Rancho vs Cibola (Girls Soccer) 10/7

The Rio Rancho Rams hosted the Cibola Cougars on Friday. Cibola was without senior defender Ava Estes, which drastically changed the Cougars’ style of play. The match went scoreless in the first half, but Rio Rancho dominated the time of possession. Rio Rancho finally opened up the scoring in the 38th minute on a floater by senior Bella Jean. Cibola had some scoring opportunities but couldn’t capitalize on them. Rio Rancho ended a four game skid and got their first district win.

Albuquerque Academy vs Los Alamos (Volleyball) 10/7

Albuquerque Academy hosted Los Alamos. The Hilltoppers won set one, 25-13. In set two, the Chargers flipped the script, winning 25-13. Tied at one set apiece, the remaining sets were much closer. Academy rallied back to steal set three with some great serving from eighth-grader #1 Rowan M. Jaime. In set four, the Hilltoppers and Chargers traded points. Los Alamos’ senior libero, Gianna Benelli, had some big-time digs to keep the Hilltoppers in the set. Academy took a 15-12 lead, leading to a timeout called by Los Alamos. Coming out of the timeout, Mairen Hoch had a huge kill to help the Hilltoppers stop the Chargers’ run. Academy quickly regained momentum with Rowan’s serving and Los Alamos errors. The Hilltoppers fought back to tie the score at 23, but Academy scored the last two points to take the set and the match, 3-1.

Eldorado vs Sandia (Football) 10/7

The Sandia Matadors improved to 6-1 overall, 2-0 in district, with their victory over the Eldorado Eagles. The Matadors held the Eagle’s high octane offense to just 14 points while hanging 33 on the board. Sandia’s defense had four takeaways on the night, 2 INTs and 2 FUM recoveries, while only surrendering two TD passes to Eldorado’s senior signal caller, Brandon Olivas. Sandia now moves into their tougher part of district play as they host (5-2) Farmington on Fri 10/13 at 7pm.

Farmington vs La Cueva (Girls Soccer) 10/8

The highly potent La Cueva Bears hosted the Farmington Scorpions in district play on Sat 10/8. The Bears were able to put away 8 goals in total while surrendering 3. In a big time performance, senior #10 Tessa Updegraff had a haul (four goals). Romy Young, Danae Decosta, Makayla Chavez, and Ruby Brucker-Polk each added a goal a piece. La Cueva improves to 12-0-1, 4-0 in district, with the 10 to 3 win.

Piedra Vista vs Sandia (Girls Soccer) 10/8

The Piedra Vista Panthers traveled to Albuquerque to play against the Sandia Matadors in district play. Sandia had four goals in the first half and added another 2 in the second. The Panthers put up a fight and had some scoring opportunities with 10 shots but the Matadors were just too much in this one. Sophomore sensation, #2 Harmony Rodriguez, had a hat trick for the Matadors. Not to be outdone, senior leader and UNM commit, #5 Ayla Dils, had a hat trick of her own for Sandia. The Matadors took the game, 6-0.

Cleveland vs Volcano Vista (Girls Soccer) 10/8

In district 1 5A, the Hawks of Volcano Vista hosted the top ranked Cleveland Storm. Cleveland came into the match on a ten game win streak. It didn’t take long for the Storm to strike as junior Arissa C’de Baca tapped in a ball already rolling into goal that bounced over the Hawks goalkeeper off of a big floating cross by senior defender, #8 Sloane Sinnott. Storm senior, #12 Sienna Salazar, added another goal in the first half. The game went into halftime with Cleveland up 2-0. Volcano Vista was able to score their lone goal of the game on a PK by freshman, #4 Kasey Sandoval to help pull the Hawks within one. While Volcano Vista desperately tried to tie the game, Cleveland senior, #5 Alexus Guillen, put the final nail in the coffin for the Storm. With a final score of 3-1 and the win, Cleveland is now 15-1, 4-0 in district. Volcano Vista drops to 8-5, 2-1 in district.
