NMAA District Realignment Plan

New NMAA District realignment and classification

The New Mexico Activities Association has unveiled its district realignment plan and classification of schools for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years. The board of directors voted in favor of the new proposal 8-4.

Football is getting a massive facelift as the districts are getting considerably larger. The NMAA believes the expanded districts will ease nondistrict scheduling issues.

There will be three districts in classes 6A, 3A, 2A, and 8-Man. The rest of the classes will have just two districts.

Lovington who just won the 4A championship will be moving up into 5A. Other moves of note, Piedra Vista jumps to 6A, Legacy Academy goes from 8-Man to 2A, and Raton and Dexter will be dropping from 3A to 2A.

There is a new initiative allowing struggling football programs to compete in a lower classification. To be eligible, teams must have had a winning percentage of 20% or less in three of the last four years, excluding the COVID year.

Schools that play down will be reevaluated based on their performance in the next two seasons. If they win a playoff game in either 2024 or 2025, or if their winning percentage is above 65% in either season, they will be moved back to their previous class.

Any school wishing to appeal their placement can do so on Dec. 11 in front of the board.

Basketball (and most other major team sports with exceptions for wrestling, soccer, and swimming/diving) will still have five to six districts depending on the class.
