October 02, 2025 – SANDIA PREP, Albuquerque, NM
Cottonwood Classical and Sandia Prep battled in a tight NMAA girls soccer matchup on Thursday, with the Coyotes ultimately pulling away late for a 3–1 win. After a scoreless first half, the intensity rose quickly in the final 40 minutes as both teams traded goals before Cottonwood finished strong to secure the victory.
The second half opened with a breakthrough from Sophia Soriano, a sophomore who put Cottonwood on the board with the first goal of the match. Her strike energized the Coyotes and set the tone for what became an action-packed final stretch.
Sandia Prep wasted little time answering back. Sophomore Madlyn Dopson equalized shortly after Soriano’s goal, leveling the score at 1–1 and shifting momentum back to the Sundevils.
Cottonwood eventually regained control when freshman Hailo Baca found the back of the net, giving her team the lead once more. Just minutes later, senior Savannah Serbin delivered the final nail in the coffin — a long strike from near midfield that took a bounce over the keeper and into the net, sealing the Coyotes’ 3–1 victory.
With the win, Cottonwood Classical extended its winning streak to eight straight and solidified itself as one of the hottest teams in Class 3A, while Sandia Prep saw its five game win streak snapped despite a competitive showing. Both sides proved they have young talent ready to make an impact this season, but Cottonwood’s ability to finish late was the decisive factor.
