The St. Michael’s Horsemen left no doubt about their place atop Class 3A on Saturday, routing Hope Christian 47–8 in a dominant District 2-3A opener in Santa Fe. Quarterback Kamal Stith delivered one of the most explosive performances of the NMAA season, throwing five first-half touchdown passes — all from 20 yards or longer — to lead the unbeaten Horsemen to a 7–0 record.

From the opening kickoff, St. Michael’s dictated the pace. After Ryan Hunt forced a fumble and C.J. Valdez recovered to set up a short field, Hunt put the Horsemen on the board with a 14-yard rushing touchdown just three minutes into the game. What followed was a clinic in execution — Stith and Hunt connected on scoring passes of 24, 39, and 20 yards, all in the first two quarters.

By halftime, the scoreboard read 40–0, and the game was effectively over. St. Michael’s piled up 304 yards of total offense in the opening half while limiting Hope Christian to just 67 yards. The Horsemen’s defense forced turnovers on nearly every early possession, including a punt, fumble, and interception that all led directly to touchdowns.

Hope Christian managed a late touchdown in the second half, but by then, St. Michael’s had already rotated through its depth chart. Despite the loss, the Huskies — now 5–2 (0–1) — showed flashes of potential but couldn’t overcome the early avalanche of mistakes against one of the most complete teams in New Mexico.

With the 47–8 victory, St. Michael’s improved to 7–0 (1–0 district) and continued its perfect season under head coach Joey Fernandez. Stith’s poise and precision — threading touchdown throws of 20, 24, and 39 yards — showcased why he’s among the top playmakers in Class 3A. If the Horsemen maintain this level of dominance, a deep postseason run looks all but inevitable.
