The La Cueva Bears overcame an opening touchdown deficit to defeat the Atrisco Heritage Academy Jaguars 49–14 on Saturday, using a dominant second quarter and a balanced attack to remain one of Class 6A’s top contenders.
Atrisco Heritage opened the game strong, stunning the Bears when junior #88 Deon Session hauled in a touchdown reception to give the Jaguars an early lead. The quick strike served as a wake-up call for La Cueva, which responded with a scoring drive capped by a touchdown from junior #7 Vaughn Sanders to tie the game.
Momentum swung fully in La Cueva’s favor moments later when #3 Jhett Kinghorn intercepted a pass and set up another Bears touchdown to make it 14–7. From there, the Bears found their rhythm. La Cueva piled up four more scores before the half, capitalizing on strong defense and great execution on offense to build a commanding 35–7 halftime advantage.
The Bears continued to control the game in the second half, eventually rotating in secondary players while still finding the end zone twice more. Atrisco Heritage managed to add one final highlight when Session caught his second touchdown reception of the day, but it wasn’t enough to slow the Bears’ offensive surge.
With the 49–14 victory, La Cueva improved its overall record to 6-2, 5-0 in district, and reinforced its reputation as one of the most complete teams in New Mexico high school football. Atrisco Heritage showed flashes of promise early, particularly through Session’s standout play, but La Cueva’s depth, defense, and consistent execution proved too much to overcome.
