Volcano Vista (1) (5-4) Atrisco Heritage (1)
October 29, 2025 – Volcano Vista High School, Albuquerque, NM
The Volcano Vista Hawks survived a tense 2025 NMAA state tournament opener, defeating the Atrisco Heritage Academy Jaguars in a penalty shootout after a 1–1 draw through regulation and overtime on Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Hawks advanced to face No. 2 seed Rio Grande in the next round on Saturday, November 1.
Volcano Vista wasted no time getting on the board as senior midfielder #11 Chris Marquez broke free on a through ball and slotted his shot to the far post, giving the Hawks an early 1–0 lead. The goal energized Volcano, which controlled much of the first half through crisp passing and steady possession.
Atrisco Heritage battled back, generating pressure late in the half through set pieces and long runs into the box. Their persistence paid off just before halftime when junior midfielder #8 Jacob Magana collected a loose ball outside the penalty area and buried a low shot into the bottom corner to level the score at 1–1 heading into the break.
The second half and overtime were marked by intensity and determination from both sides. The Hawks and Jaguars traded chances but neither team could find the winning goal, forcing the match into a decisive shootout. Each side converted their first four attempts before Atrisco’s fifth shot sailed wide left, opening the door for Volcano to seal it.
“I already knew what corner I was going to. I already knew where I was going before we even started PK shootouts. It’s just a confidence that you have to have I think.”
