ALBUQUERQUE — The top-seeded Hobbs Eagles surged past the No. 4 Albuquerque Bulldogs for a 66–38 victory in the NMAA girls state semifinal, using a dominant second half to secure a spot in the championship game.
Both teams opened cautiously, trading possessions and defensive stops as Hobbs edged ahead 7–6 after the first quarter. The Eagles began to separate in the second period, tightening their defense and finding offensive rhythm to outscore Albuquerque 13–4, taking a 20–10 lead into halftime.
Hobbs delivered the decisive blow after the break. The Eagles erupted for 24 points in the third quarter, fueled by transition opportunities and efficient half-court execution that stretched the margin beyond reach. They continued their offensive surge with 22 points in the fourth, closing out the convincing semifinal win.
Senior standout Matysen Zepeda led all scorers with 21 points, pacing a balanced Hobbs attack. Kacelynn Muniez added 14 points, while Xoey Ross chipped in 13 as the Eagles showcased depth and scoring versatility. For Albuquerque, Abby Pavia fought to keep the Bulldogs going, finishing with a team-high 15 points.
With the victory, Hobbs advances to the state championship game, where the Eagles will face the winner of the semifinal matchup between Rio Rancho and Volcano Vista. Albuquerque’s season ends after a strong postseason run, while Hobbs moves one step closer to securing another state title.
